A few days ago we were watching our local news and saw an upcoming story would be regarding the cost of prescription drugs. We looked at each other and already knew there were people skipping getting their medications because they were on several and also the costs. What possibly could this News story have to tell us? Inquiring minds want to know.
The story tells us that prescription drug spending jumped 13 percent the previous year which was the biggest jump since 2003. As we continued to watch it was more on the specialty drugs for people with chronic illnesses or conditions. Dr. Taffy has talked with people who have cancer and what they pay for their medications is literally through the roof. That is one reason she knows people are having fundraising campaign. They can’t afford these medications they desperately need that is life saving.
What are cancer patients supposed to do when the pharmaceutical companies are saying the medications are being labeled in a different tier and they have to pass that costs on to the patient? We had the discussion about how some of these same medications that are costing a fortune in the United States can be purchased for less in other countries. They don’t cost nearly as much. Yet, there are people going without.
One of the gentleman who was interviewed on our local news was saying how he couldn’t afford his medications. That it was 5xs more expensive than several years before. What saddened us was the whole time he was talking his hands were shaking. The local guy had Medicaid I believe and he couldn’t participate in the pharmacies discount plan.
