Having talked with people regularly, one theme that seems to be constant amongst the conversation is the middle class people are getting hit really hard when it comes to health insurance premiums and the deductible. It doesn’t matter whether it is local or people are calling in from other states, the theme is the same.
Who won when it came to health insurance? Those who were uninsured and had a pre-existing condition and those who were low income. Those who seem to have been penalized are those who are young and healthy, middle class workers, those who are healthy and are employed.
What is happening to the middle income is they are paying so much out of pocket, (remember they have health insurance), they would rather skip those doctors visits, checkups in order to save money. Let’s face it, if you are reading this… how many times have you said to yourself, oh I will just go another time. Or you self-medicate because it doesn’t appear to be serious?
It is a shame that people who have done what they thought was the right thing by putting insurance in place, can’t even afford to go to a doctor because they are paying so much out of pocket. Having health insurance with high medical insurance deductibles is out of balance. These middle income families are working. What are they paying for?
Dr. Taffy has always taught people who were contacting us about health insurance to go through the following checklist:
(1) Look at how many times you go to a doctor
(2) Look at how much you paid over the last couple of years
(3) Look at the household budget
(4) Look at how many prescriptions you take
(5) What is the cost of the premium and deductible that you have to meet BEFORE your benefits kick in?
People are truly being faced with what is the least amount I can go to the doctor for. One thing people may want to consider is the Walk-in Clinics at Walgreens. Here in Colorado, those are about $79 without any insurance or discount plan. At least, you would be in a position to be seen, get a diagnosis and then proceed from there.
