Did you realize the Deadline for the Special Enrollment ends today? You remember this was only for those people who had to pay the penalty for not having insurance for the year 2014. In the beginning, it didn’t seem as if many people were participating in this Special Enrollment. Then of course there was somewhat of a turnaround.
Three states did not participate in the special enrollment. They had their own state exchanges and it was their choice not to. So for those people in those states, if they were paying the penalty for 2014 that wouldn’t change. They also couldn’t enroll for 2015.
Consequently, Dr. Wagner talked with someone who thought the special enrollment meant they would have an opportunity to enroll for 2014 and not pay the penalty. This is why you must stay up to date on what is happening with the law and exceptions that get made.
There also were some people who didn’t enroll for 2015 thinking they could enroll during this special enrollment. Dr. Wagner had to explain to them that they could enroll for 2015 IF they met the criteria for a qualifying event but not this special enrollment.
You wouldn’t believe how many people just dismissed health insurance altogether because they were self-employed or a small business owner and truly expected it to cost too much. We are not saying they are wrong, it just was surprising.
We are strong advocates for getting the information first before you make a decision. This way it is an informed decision and not just because a group of friends expressed how they felt about health insurance.
How did this work out for you? Let us hear from you about your experience. Did you decide to get health insurance or did you change your mind? Did you decide that the penalty was going to be less expensive? Everybody’s situation is completely different. You can’t put everyone in a box and say it will all be the same.
